Spotlight on UKNetworker Members: Spark Business Network

In the bustling city of Nottingham, a new networking group is making waves by fostering genuine connections and collaboration among entrepreneurs and professionals. Meet Spark Business Network, led by Andy Baker, an entrepreneur with over 15 years of experience in business networking. Spark is more than just a networking group—it’s a thriving community designed to support, inspire, and grow businesses across Nottingham and beyond.

A Journey Rooted in Networking

Question: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you became involved in running this networking group?

Answer: I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 15 years, and throughout my journey, I’ve found business networking to be hugely beneficial. It’s helped me meet some incredible people who have become joint venture partners, service providers, and even friends. Networking has always been a vital part of my professional life, and I’ve always fancied the idea of running my own networking business.

I came across the Spark networking group through its founder, Jess White, and was instantly drawn to the brand and concept. It really aligned with my values, and I saw a fantastic opportunity to get involved. That’s why I decided to take it on as a franchise, becoming the first franchisee of the Spark Business Network in the UK. We’re based in Nottingham but also have a presence in Grantham, Newark, and Mansfield.

For me, Spark is more than just a networking group – it’s an incredible opportunity to connect with other businesses, support new business owners and entrepreneurs, and improve my own skills by learning from others. It’s also about building a social network of like-minded, passionate business owners who are as dedicated to their businesses as I am to mine. My goal is to genuinely help people develop, grow, and build their businesses into whatever they aspire to achieve.

Filling a Gap with Genuine Connection

Question: What inspired you to start or lead this particular networking group? Was there a specific need or gap in the market that you wanted to address?

Answer: Spark stood out to me as something a bit different from other networking groups I’d attended. It had a real focus on social connection while also being highly supportive and collaborative. The face-to-face events were just one part of it – they felt more like a night out than a typical business meeting, with a friendly, positive atmosphere that made networking feel enjoyable rather than just work.

What really caught my attention was the sense of community. The members weren’t just attendees; they were part of the team, actively supporting one another and speaking so fondly of the group that it felt like something special. It was more than just a networking group – it was a community where people genuinely wanted to connect, learn from each other, and support one another’s growth.

One of the things that really impressed me was how natural the referrals felt. They weren’t forced or transactional – they came from a place of trust and genuine connection. Beyond just referrals, though, it was about learning from one another, promoting each other, celebrating wins, pushing each other to do better, and holding each other accountable.

Mission-Driven Networking

Question: How would you describe the mission or purpose of your networking group?

Answer: The main mission of Spark Business Network is to create a thriving, collaborative community where entrepreneurs, small business owners, and professionals can connect, share knowledge, and grow together. We’re all about building genuine relationships that go beyond simple transactions, encouraging long-term collaborations, knowledge exchange, and personal development.

Our purpose is to support our community by providing a platform that helps businesses tackle challenges, celebrate successes, and explore new opportunities. It’s about creating a space where people can learn from one another, build lasting connections, and grow both personally and professionally.

What Sets Spark Apart

Question: What makes your networking group unique compared to others in the UK or within your region or industry?

Answer: Spark is unique because it offers a relaxed and inclusive environment where people can truly be themselves. We move away from the typical business card exchange and instead focus on creating a social, friendly atmosphere where genuine connections are made.

One of our key differences is that we don’t limit attendance to just one person per industry. We welcome a wide range of professionals, from startups and freelancers to seasoned business owners. We believe in collaboration over competition – everyone has their own niche, and there’s usually plenty of work to go around when people work together and build a strong community.

What also sets us apart is the variety of events we hold. We’re not stuck in a routine of doing the same thing in the same place. Instead, we mix it up with different formats, including business speakers, speed networking, themed nights, and informal evening gatherings. This variety means there’s something for everyone, keeping the atmosphere fresh and engaging.

A Diverse and Dynamic Audience

Question: Who is your target audience and what kind of professionals typically attend your events?

Answer: Our target audience is quite broad and inclusive, ranging from solopreneurs, small business owners, freelancers, consultants, and coaches to professionals seeking career growth and innovators. We also attract seasoned business owners who have already achieved significant success but enjoy giving back by helping others.

What makes Spark unique is the combination of established professionals and those just starting out or with less experience. This creates an incredible dynamic where both groups support and learn from each other.

Events That Inspire Connection

Question: How often do you host meetings or events and what formats do they usually take, e.g. breakfast, workshops, online sessions?

Answer: Our events are always person-to-person, with a strong focus on creating relaxed, informal environments where people can genuinely connect. We host a variety of event formats, including workshops, speaker sessions, speed networking events, and themed gatherings.

We also have members-only sessions that can be both in-person and online, offering co-working opportunities and more structured networking, always aimed at fostering deeper connections within the community.

Success Stories Worth Celebrating

Question: Can you share one or two success stories from members of your group?

Answer: One standout success story is a member who joined the Nottingham Spark group after being part of the Kent Spark. Since joining the network, she increased her business turnover by over 300%. She’s found Spark to be an invaluable tool for generating referrals, building community, and growing her business.

We’ve also seen a real mindset shift among members, recognising the importance of connection and community in their business growth. It’s been amazing to see people share feedback and support each other’s progress.

Advice for Aspiring Networking Leaders

Question: What advice would you give someone thinking about starting their own networking group?

Answer: Make sure your networking group aligns with your values and interests. I chose a franchise that reflected my values because I knew it would be meaningful to me. It’s important to build something you enjoy being part of.

Also, understand that different people thrive in different environments. Whether it’s a structured, referral-based model or a more relaxed social gathering, choose the approach that feels right for you and your personality.

The Spirit of Spark

Question: If you could summarise the spirit of your networking group in three words, what would they be?

Answer: Supportive, collaborative, and growth.

A Theme Song for Spark

Question: On a lighter note, if your networking group had a theme song, what would it be and why?

Answer: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman – because it captures the sense of connection and support we aim to build. Another great option would be the Cheers theme tune, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” by Gary Portnoy – it’s welcoming, familiar, and friendly, just like our events.
